Depressing / Fascinating picture of the current financial crisis.

This documentary comes in three parts. This is the first of the three parts.

I found it very interesting, and compelling. Unfortunately, it does not suggest that things will end well for the current economic order. I only post things here that grab my attention, that I think others may be interested in as well.

Damson Plums

On the way home, I crossed this river.

I went into a field on the other side. There was a row of old damson plum trees along one of its edges. Ripe fruit was hanging from them.

I picked one.

Mushroom Flies?

I walked up the side of the valley near Portlaw this morning. Spectacular view:

I saw some new bracket fungus growing out of a tree stump by the wall behind me. A sure sign of autumn.

There were lots of pale-coloured flies around it. And many more beneath!

Is there some kind of biological association between fly and fungus?

Breaking News: The Galaxy is Rich in Small, Rocky, Earth-Sized Planets!

This really is breaking news. More than 100 planets that are a similar size to Earth have been discovered in the past few weeks,

I have just been looking at a TED talk by a chap called Dimitar Sasselov, who announced this. The Kepler telescope is being used to discover small planets around stars in the local region of the galaxy (a sphere with a diameter of 100 light years). They reckon that there may be 100 million small rocky planets in the galaxy altogether.

Definitely another Copernican revolution in the offing. I daresay we are being visited by some of our neighbours already!
